A Filing System

Capricorns are known for being organized, practical, disciplined, and above all patient.

Not what the public thinks about when they picture the struggling artist type. Running my own business and studio is a challenge, but the traits of an organized Capricorn make this feel like a good match, and it helps keep my sanity.

One of the organizational shortcuts I have been using for years is a filing system. I learned this back when studying graphic design at the School of Visual Arts. Many of the professors stressed for us to keep inspirational swipe files. Not to be confused with files I have on my computer desktop, these are manila files I use for storing reference materials. Some of the topics are: favorite patterns, glass orders, taxidermy birds, glass memberships, art shippers, MTA commission, upcoming and past residencies. You get the idea.

In a special, more private area of my workshop is a collection of 5 overstuffed files and sketch books which are my “future glass” files. These are a collections of sketches that come from a different, more creative part of my brain. If there were ever a fire I would grab this drawer, put on my pants, check my hair, and run for safety. These encompass projects ideas I have been collecting for over 10 years. Soon I will fine an art intern or two to help produce more work from these files... any volunteers please contact me! Having these illustrations on paper frees my mind for the next inspirational moment.

Above is a tiny original sketch on a post-it which inspired my “The Horse Seeking Revenge on the Stag” stained glass panel.
